If someone put that silver particle stop-leak into your cooling system, that may well be a significant part of the problem. I’ll hit another quick cruise in the morning, idle it, let it cool, drain, refill with water only and drop it off to get the other stuff fixed I don’t think that clutch and fan are doing much to be honest. I’ve got plenty of hand tools, got some decent free time, have a bit of funds to get the right stuff but I have no patience for how consistent this Buick keeps degrading.Īnyway the temp stayed right under 210 unless I was at a light it creeped up a little over but back down once in motion. I can’t catch a break car must be cursed. Took a shorter ride after the sun went down because my right turn signal decided to quit working. Put the heat on full blast, put in two of the blue devil flush since it’s 1 per 12 quarts… I’ve got 20 according to the manual. After losing the drain plug somewhere in the frame I’m assuming and finally getting another one across town I finally got to it Only flush treatment I could get ahold of was some blue devil flush and prestone flush. Must of worked whenever the previous owner did it because there’s no leaks but probably shouldn’t stay in there. In the drain pan I noticed some of that silver flake junk that looks like that stop leak stuff. We do get a couple freezes during the winter but it’s not a daily thing for us to be worried about.Īfter I drained it looking inside the radiator I could see what looked like algae… anyway it’s junk that’s in there and what I could get on my fingers was obviously crud that doesn’t belong. I’m at higher elevations than most of Texas. I can drain it, run a couple cycles of cleaner and water for a flush, and see where it goes from there. I planned on an aluminum radiator down the line because of the temps but if that solves it then it’s more money towards other stuff.Ĭurrently running the premix 50/50 coolant. Should probably throw the new timing chain in there too since I’ve got it.ĭeleted the emissions, EGR, switches on the intake, plugged what needed to be plugged etcįactory radiator, unknown thermostat, should I get a fan clutch that comes on sooner and maybe a different fan? Maybe a combo? Of course that’s more than the inline filter solution but at the end of the day I do want it to run cooler. Could be,Ĭlick to expand.Don’t have the light for checking the timing so while I replace the tank with powdered rust in it I’ll have the shop check and set it for me. There could be lots of reasons why the engine runs so hot. The factory vapor line is as good as it gets. You will be wasting your money with that gas filter. Ģ10* is probably a typical operating temperature for a 455 with A/C back in the day, but they didn't have the cat piss gasoline we have today. I'd use 25% anti freeze and 75% distilled water. You don't need that much freeze protection in Texas. Get rid of any emissions systems that eliminate vacuum advance in the lower gears.Ĭheck the fan clutch, make sure it isn't freewheeling. Check the mechanical advance, and the vacuum advance. When you do, don't just look at the initial timing, that won't tell you anything. Ignition timing? You have to have it checked? Do it yourself. Thermostat? If it's a 195* stat, don't expect the engine to run cooler than that. It is really inadequate to the task at hand anyway. Old stock radiator, it's probably at least partially clogged.
